Finding quality protein in Belgium is easier than you think — once you know where to look. Whether you shop at Delhaize, Colruyt, Lidl, or Albert Heijn, this guide covers the best options by price, quality, and convenience.

The Top 6 Protein Sources

🍗 Chicken Breast

25g protein / 100g

The most reliable protein source in every Belgian supermarket. Colruyt and Lidl offer the best price per kilo. Buy in bulk, cook in batches on Sunday — done for the week. Air fryer or oven, minimal prep time.

📍 Best price: Colruyt · Lidl

🥚 Eggs

6g protein / egg

Cheap, complete protein, available everywhere. Buy the 12-pack at Colruyt or the Lidl own brand. Hard boil a batch at the start of the week. One of the best protein-per-euro options in Belgium — and one of the most versatile.

📍 Best price: Colruyt · Lidl · Aldi

🥛 Cottage Cheese (Kwark / Fromage Blanc)

10–12g protein / 100g

Massively underrated. Very low fat, high protein, available at every supermarket. Mix with fruit, use as a sauce base, or eat straight. A Belgian staple that doubles perfectly as a fitness food.

📍 Available at: Delhaize · Colruyt · Albert Heijn

🫙 Greek Yogurt

8–10g protein / 100g

Fage, Danone Oikos, or supermarket own brands all work. Good as a snack, post-workout, or breakfast base. Delhaize has the best selection. Check the label — some flavoured versions have added sugar.

📍 Best selection: Delhaize · Colruyt

🐟 Canned Tuna & Sardines

20–25g protein / can

Best price-to-protein ratio in the supermarket. Keep a stock at home for quick meals — tuna rice bowl in 5 minutes. Sardines also bring omega-3, which most people don't get enough of.

📍 Best price: Colruyt · Lidl · Aldi

🥩 Lean Beef & Turkey Mince

20–22g protein / 100g

More variety than chicken, slightly higher fat. Turkey mince is leaner and often cheaper. Great for batch cooking — bolognese, stuffed peppers, stir-fry. Available fresh at Colruyt and Delhaize.

📍 Best price: Colruyt · Delhaize

Practical tip: Do one big shop per week. Build your cart around protein first, then fill in everything else. Aim for 3–4 different protein sources to keep meals varied without overthinking it.

What About Whey Protein?

Not available in supermarkets but worth knowing about. Prozis, MyProtein, and Bulk all deliver to Belgium quickly. Per gram of protein, a good whey powder is often cheaper than chicken when you do the maths. Useful for when food isn't practical — post-training, busy mornings, travel.

That said, real food first. Whey is a supplement, not a replacement.
