Personal Trainer vs Gym Membership
in Brussels

Gym membership at €25 a month, or a personal trainer at €35 to €50 a session? Put like that, it's not even close — the gym wins on the sticker. But price and value aren't the same thing. The real question isn't which is cheaper. It's which one actually gets you the result you're paying for. Here's the honest breakdown.

What Each Option Really Costs in Brussels

Let's put the numbers on the table first, then talk about what they buy you.

Gym Membership

Typically €20–€150 / month
  • 🟢 Budget chains (Basic-Fit and similar): around €20–€35/month
  • 🟢 Mid-range clubs: around €40–€70/month
  • 🟢 Premium clubs (Aspria and similar): €80–€150+/month
  • 🔸 Group classes often only in higher tiers
  • 🔸 Equipment and space — but no guidance

Personal Trainer

Typically €35–€50 / session
  • 🟣 A program built around your body and goal
  • 🟣 Technique corrected in real time
  • 🟣 Nutrition guidance included
  • 🟣 Accountability — someone expects you
  • 🟣 Faster results, fewer wasted months

On paper, the gym is a fraction of the cost. But a membership is only cheap if you actually use it — and use it well. That's where the comparison gets interesting. For the full detail on coaching prices, see my guide on how much a personal trainer costs in Brussels.

The Hidden Cost of a Gym Membership

Here's what the €25/month figure doesn't show. A large share of gym memberships go barely used — people sign up in January, go a few times, then keep paying for a door they stop walking through. That's not €25 a month. That's €25 a month for nothing.

And even for those who do show up, the membership only rents you the room. It doesn't tell you:

The result, for a lot of people: months of effort, little to show for it, and eventually the membership quietly gets cancelled. The cheap option turned out expensive — because it produced nothing.

When a Gym Membership Is the Right Call

To be clear — a gym membership on its own is a great option for the right person. It's the right call if you:

If that's you, save your money — go train. You don't need to pay for guidance you can already give yourself.

When a Personal Trainer Is Worth Every Euro

A personal trainer earns their price the moment guessing on your own would cost you more — in time, in results, or in injury. That's the case if you:

The honest test: if you've had a gym membership before and it didn't get you where you wanted, the problem was never the gym. It was the lack of a plan and someone to hold you to it. That's exactly the gap a coach fills.

The Smartest Option: Combine Both

Here's what I actually recommend to most people — and it's not "one or the other." The best value comes from using them in sequence.

Start with a personal trainer for the first weeks or months. Learn correct technique, get a program built for you, understand how to progress and how to eat. Once that foundation is solid, you have two choices: keep training on your own at the gym with the knowledge you now have, or move to lighter online follow-up to stay on track.

You pay for coaching where it matters most — at the start, where mistakes are expensive — and for the room where it's cheap. That's how you get results without overspending. Many of my clients do exactly this: intensive coaching to build the base, then a gym membership or online check-ins to maintain and progress.
